DESCRIPTION CORRECT FOR 2011 SCANDINAVIA & BALTIC CRUISES
Here we will visit the museum built around the 17th century warship Vasa, which sank in Stockholm’s inner harbour on her maiden voyage. The discovery of the ship was made in 1956, and its subsequent salvage in 1961 is an important event in marine archaeology. Painstakingly restored to much of its original glory, the Vasa represents an authentic piece of living history. We will be guided through the Museum before having some free time.
Leaving the Vasa Museum, we now continue to Stockholm’s oldest quarter, Gamla Stan (Old Town). As we take a guided walk along the narrow, twisting alleys and cobblestone streets, we will take in the elegance and experience the medieval intimacy. Houses sporting Baroque doorways and rusting coats of arms add to the Bohemian atmosphere.
TOUR NOTES: There is approximately one hour of walking at the Vasa Museum, and then around 30 minutes of free time. There is also a walk of approximately one-hour in the Old Town, over cobblestones, followed by a short amount of free time. Not recommended for guests with limited mobility, and not suitable for wheelchairs. If you wish to use the toilets in the Old Town, a 5 Kronor coin is required – there are toilet facilities at the Museum.
