TOUR A - HIGHLIGHTS OF MURMANSK

    Excursions

    • £30 - £40
    • 3 to 3.5 Hours
    • Moderate

This tour by coach will show us some of the highlights of Murmansk. First a photo stop will be made at the Palace of Culture, also known as Kirov’s Palace, site of the city’s founding. We proceed to the Monument to the Defenders of the Kola Land, ‘Alyosha’ – a large statue of a lone soldier on the outskirts of Murmansk, overlooking the city.

Returning to the centre of the city, we will see Lenin Prospekt, the main thoroughfare of Murmansk, the Monument to the Sister Towns, the Monument to the Anti-Hitler Coalition (a human palm holding a globe) and Sport’s Square. Continuing our tour, we shall pause at the Monument to the Victims of Intervention.

Travelling to the southern area of Murmansk, we will pass the Valley of Uyut and see the southern part of the city. Back in the city once more, we will visit the Museum of Regional Studies. There are exhibits on areas such as the tundra zone, the Barents Sea, Lapps, the development of icebreakers, and World War II.

TOUR NOTES: There is a moderate amount of walking involved in this tour, most of which will be at the Museum of Regional Studies. This visit is guided, with approximately 60 minutes of walking and standing, and there are approximately 60 steps to negotiate. There is around 200 metres (650 feet) of walking at Alyosha. There is also a walk of approximately 50 metres (165 feet) to/from the tour bus. Guests may choose to remain on the tour bus at the photo stops if preferred. The order of the itinerary may vary from that described. Appropriate conservative dress should be worn for the church visit – ladies are advised to cover their head. Please note that souvenirs may be available to purchase at the Museum.
