KRYSUVIK & THE BLUE LAGOON - TOUR C

    Excursions

    • 5 hours
    • Limited Capacity

We start with a pleasant drive through Hafnarfjörður town, situated picturesquely on an ancient lava flow. We continue along the enchanting Kleifarvatn Lake, one of the deepest lakes in Iceland, where we have a short photo stop. Then we head to the geothermal fields of Krýsuvík. Here we witness the powerful jets of steam escaping from deep below the earth’s crust and multicoloured pools of boiling mud of the fumaroles.

The Blue Lagoon is close by, which owes its existence to a nearby geothermal power plant. The mineral rich water of the lagoon – reputed for its healing properties – is a warm 37-39°C (99-102°F). The blueness of the water, the steam and the 4 metre (13 feet) high lava wall surrounding the lagoon create a unique atmosphere. This natural and very popular health spa is now a major attraction in the region, and one of the most visited places on the island.

After viewing the Blue Lagoon we drive over the lava covered Reykjanes peninsula to the outskirts of the small town of Njarðvík. We will see “Icelander” (Islendingur) - a fully seaworthy replica of an average sized Viking ship. It is 23 metres (75 feet) long and 5.25 metres (17 feet) wide and would have carried a crew of 70. The shipbuilder Gunnar Eggertsson travelled onboard the replica to America and back in 2000, to commemorate the one-thousandth anniversary of his countrymen navigating to and discovering North America.

We drive back through the Reykjanes lava fields, to our awaiting ship.

TOUR NOTES: There is a moderate amount of walking on this tour – approximately two hours in total - over some uneven and sloping ground and steps are encountered. The geothermal area can be seen from the coach, there are also wooden walkways around part of the site. Please note that the visit to the Blue Lagoon is not for bathing, as we will not the have time, but our guide will escort us in before we have free time here. At the Viking Ship Museum there are stairs (and a lift) to an upper floor overlooking the ship. Please note that the coach used may not have air conditioning. Part of the journey may be over uneven gravel roads, however the majority of the journey will be on tarmac roads. It should be noted that refreshments are not included, but are available to purchase at the Blue Lagoon if we wish.
