MANAUS, AMAZON
We’ll take an approximate one-hour riverboat ride up the dark waters of the mysterious Rio Negro. Here we’ll see the huts of the ribeirinhos (river people), clustered on the riverbanks. For our comfort, the riverboat is equipped with restroom facilities (although these may be basic), and we can purchase refreshments from a cash bar; US Dollars are accepted. (Complimentary mineral water is supplied.)

We take a moonlit riverboat cruise into the dense jungle backwaters, where we’ll transfer to a small-motorised canoe. Under the expert direction of our native guide, we’ll glide silently into the flooded forest and its countless overgrown tributaries. Armed only with a flashlight, our guide will attempt to locate caimans by startling them with the light.

MANAUS, AMAZON
Manaus is today the centre of a rapidly developing Amazon region. The city’s old-world mansions and monuments still exist but are now set among modern skyscrapers. The finest example of architecture from this period is the Teatro Amazonas (Opera House), which we will see during our tour. Newly renovated, the 1896 Teatro Amazonas appears in its entire belle époque splendour. It is a symbol of the region’s past ‘golden era’ of the rubber boom, and still ranks as one of the world’s most elegant theatres.

SANTAREM, AMAZON
From the pier in Santarem, we travel on the Cuiaba Road before continuing south on the Santarem-Cuiaba Highway – the only road connecting this part of the Amazon with other points in Brazil. At this point we will reach an elevation of 158 metres (518 feet), which might be considered the Alps for the Amazon! A few minutes later we will enter a secondary dirt road that will take us to Bosque Santa Lúcia (Santa Lucia Woods). Different stages of ‘slash and burn’ agriculture and the effect it has on the forest and land can be observed on this stretch of road.
