This tour gives us the opportunity to learn about the rich cultural and historical heritage of Montenegro, as well as its natural beauty.
Departing the quayside, we drive to Cetinje along the new road offering beautiful views of the littoral around Budva. Cetinje, which lies at the foot of Mount Lovcen, is the former capital of Montenegro. The town was formerly the seat of the bishops of Montenegro, who ruled the country from here. Upon arrival, we visit the National Museum, which was once the palace of King Nikola Petrovic I, who ruled from 1860 to 1918. The museum has an authentic interior and houses collections of arms, flags, coins, costume and uniforms from the 18th century.
Following our visit, we can enjoy some free time to explore independently, prior to re-boarding our tour coach for the short drive to Njegusi, the birthplace of Petar Petrovic-Njegos, who was considered to be the most important Montenegrin leader of all time. Besides laying the foundations for the modern Montenegrin state, and the subsequent Kingdom of Montenegro, Petrovic-Njegos is also known as one of the foremost South Slav poets. We shall stop briefly in Njegusi to taste some local specialities, before we travel along the famous winding road back to Kotor, enjoying panoramic views over the whole Gulf of Kotor.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves approximately 45 minutes of compulsory walking at the National Museum. Our visit of the museum will cover two floors, therefore unfortunately it is not suitable for wheelchair users. For reference, there will be around 45 minutes of free time in Cetinje, where walking is at the discretion of the individual. For reference, toilet facilities are available at our refreshment stop, and also local cafés in Cetinje.
