TOUR A - ALBEROBELLO
Excursions
- 37 - 41
- 5 hours
Departing the quayside, we proceed through the beautiful green Apulian countryside, dotted with vineyards, almond and olive trees and scattered with ‘trulli’ – unique white stone houses, beehive-shaped with grey stone roofs, constructed without mortar.
Alberobello is famous for its trulli, and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The drive here takes approximately one hour and 15 minutes, and upon arrival, we visit the historical centre of the village, with hundreds of these buildings, constructed during the 6th and 7th centuries. Having admired the strange shapes surrounding us, we will then visit the early 20th century Church of Saint Antony, built mixing Romanesque-Apulian style with the architecture of the trulli.
Next we have the opportunity to sample some regional produce of taralli (a type of bread stick), olives and wine before enjoying some free time to explore the local alleyways of this tiny village, prior to returning to our ship.
TOUR NOTES: This is a walking tour, which involves approximately two hours of walking, some of which will be over hilly terrain, and there are steps to negotiate. Unfortunately it is not suitable for wheelchair users. For reference, there is approximately one hour of free time, where walking is at the discretion of the individual. Please note that due to religious ceremonies and other functions, it is not always possible to visit the inside of the Church.
