    TOUR D - TROGIR & DIOCLETIAN’S PALACE

    Excursions

    • £40 - £50
    • 5.5 hours
    • Hard

Departing the quayside, we take a short drive to Trogir. Upon arrival, our guide will lead us on a walking tour of this ancient city, which was declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1997. The heart of Trogir is a small islet situated between the gentle hills on the mainland and the island of Ciovo, settled by the Greeks in the 3rd and 4th centuries BC during their hunts across the Mediterranean.

Next we shall visit the Cathedral of St Lawrence, with Radovan’s Portal at the entrance – a monumental and unique piece of Dalmatian medieval plastic art and the town’s most famous monument. The Cathedral was built upon the foundations of the old basilica and is still the tallest building in Trogir, dominating the area.

We return to our coach for the journey back to Split. We proceed to the city centre from where we continue on foot with our guide into the heart of the ancient town enclosing the Diocletian’s Palace. Don’t be misled by its 17 centuries – the aged town has youthful blood and has been capturing the hearts of generations for centuries. Although most tales about Split inevitably begin with the palace from which Emperor Diocletian ruled his world, this town is nevertheless much more than merely a part of the Roman heritage from which it sprang. Split is one of the cradles in which the traditions of the West, Antique and Christians have been rocked.

From the lively Piazza del Signori, with the 15th century Town Hall, we proceed into the heart of the Diocletian’s Palace and visit the Perystile – the inner court of the ancient palace and the present day Cathedral Square. We shall also visit the ancient Temple of Jupiter, which was transformed into the Baptistery during the medieval period. Continuing, we visit the Cathedral and its Treasury, built on the remains of the Diocletian’s Mausoleum. It contains some impressive works of art including a 13th century pulpit – a very good example of Dalmatian stone-masonry and the oldest choir-stalls in Dalmatia.

Finally, we visit the Diocletian’s cellars, the ground-floor halls of the imperial apartments, before enjoying some free time at leisure, where we can visit the nearby marketplace. Re-boarding our tour coach, we then return to the quayside.

TOUR NOTES: Please note that this tour involves approximately three hours of compulsory walking, covering a distance of around one and a half kilometres (one mile). There are approximately 20 steps to reach the entrance of the Cathedral and Treasury, and a few steps at the other stops, therefore it is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or wheelchair users. There will be around one hour of free time, where walking is at the discretion of the individual. Visitors to the Cathedral should be conservatively dressed (i.e. no shorts or vests). For reference, toilet facilities are available at local cafés.
