    TOUR C - MEDINA & BARDO MUSEUM

    Excursions

    • £20 - £30
    • Approx. 4 hours
    • Medium/Hard

Our tour begins with a drive from the port to the Bardo Museum, which includes one of the richest collections of Roman mosaics in the world. Housed in the palace, which was once the residence of the Beys of Tunis, the Bardo’s collection of artefacts also includes statues, jewellery and incredible Roman mosaics, all displaying skilled workmanship, design and variety.

Continuing, we drive to the Medina, the old town in Tunis – an intricate mix of alleys and covered passages, full of scents and colours and energetic trade. The Medina of Tunis, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, contains some 700 monuments including palaces, mosques and fountains dating from the Almohads and Hafsids periods.

Upon arrival, we shall embark on a guided walking tour around the town to see the rich cultural heritage and exquisite craftsmanship. We can enjoy some free time here to explore at leisure or perhaps browse the many souks of spices, perfumes, gold and silver.

Following our visit to the Medina, we return to our awaiting ship.

TOUR NOTES: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking – approximately 1,000 metres (3,280 feet) through the Medina, over cobbled terrain, plus walking at the Bardo Museum. There are approximately 60 steps to negotiate at the Bardo Museum. Unfortunately this tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or wheelchair users. For reference, toilet facilities are available at the Bardo Museum. There is a charge of one Tunisian Dinar per person to use cameras at the Museum (price correct at the time of printing). It is not possible to take large bags into the Bardo Museum. Please note that the souk in the Medina is a typical Arab market, where shopkeepers are persistent and try hard to sell their products. It is recommended that guests haggle over prices if interested in purchasing goods, however if they are NOT interested, they are advised to politely decline and move on. Guests who chose to purchase carpets during the period of free time should be aware that they do so at their own risk.
