About us

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has defined and refined the cruise experience, and judging by the number of passengers that come back time and again, we seem to have styled it to perfection.

The company originated in Hvitsten, a small town on Oslofjord in Norway, in 1848 when three Olsen brothers – Fredrik Christian, Petter and Andreas – bought their first ships and began an international shipping company.

Now into the fifth generation of the family, they operate companies skilled in various aspects of the cruise and passenger shipping trade as well as aviation, ships’ crewing, shipbuilding and offshore industries.

Aside from the transportation industries, the Fred. Olsen group also has interests in the luxury hotel sector, estate management, property development, and electronics companies.

Offices for the company are spread throughout the world, although the company headquarters remain firmly in the family’s hands in Oslo and Tenerife. Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is based in Ipswich in Suffolk.

Fred. Olsen History

The Olsen family business can be traced back to 1848.  Here, a young shipmaster called Fredrik Christian Olsen (known as the First Fred. Olsen) entered shipowning on his own account.  His earliest vessels were wooden schooners of little more than 50 gross tons.

Pricing Policy

We have two pricing options available, which give you the opportunity to make the right choice for you when booking your cruise. Anchor Fares offer excellent value for money, although have some limitations and restrictions. Freedom Fares offer the best choice, benefits and flexibility, including choosing your room number and dining time. Where cruises are available with Anchor Fares, you can still book a Freedom Fare if you would prefer more flexibility.

Service: The service was very efficient pleasant and good humored and the appearance of your on board staff was always impressive. We would and have already recommended the cruise to friends and would seriously consider another one from Rosythe which is close to home . It would appear the most cruise operators think that everyone should live in the so called" home counties". I have already reported that we appeared to have been overcharged by booking through Barrhead Travel by about £250 even after their loyalty bonus of £50. The only disappointment on the cruise was the guide at St Petersburgh she should never be employed again (Bus 12)

Service: The holiday was enjoyable and places visited were interesting. Sadly, at this moment I am not sure if I shall be able to go on another cruise. Sleeping was poor in the first cabin,(and I must have good quality sleep) and I picked up a virus which I am still trying to shake off. Hopefully I shall feel differently soon All the best EMP

Service: Yes highly recommended although I am a single traveler and don't understand why the single rates have to be so expensive - it restricts our choice of holiday!

Service: Our second time cruising and we had a fantastic time. Weather caused us to miss one of the scheduled ports of call, the alternative wasn't great. And we were late into another couple of ports again due to weather and to a passenger taking ill. However the service provided by the all the staff on board is second to none. I really believe Fred Olsen employs the nicest most hardworking people who do everything to ensure that your holiday is as enjoyable as it can be. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and the visits to the various ports as they were all places we had never been before. In fact we enjoyed it so much we're booked to go with Fred Olsen again next year!
Product: It was really enjoyable, the only negative (and it's a very small one) is that we choose a cruise from Rosyth and felt the number of consecutive days at sea was quite long for us. No other negatives.

Service: given that the cruise coincided with Storm Brian, the Captain made the correct decision to travel to Honfleur in France and shelter there overnight. Although this altered the itinerary somewhat i.e. we did not stop in Gibraltar or Almeria we still think that the captain made the correct decision and this did not affect our enjoyment of the cruise.
Product: Original itinerary was what we wanted however weather circumstances prevailed and Seville was beyond our expectations.
